We met with Tesco Plc on the 12th September 2022. At the meeting they outlined how the Old Hoover Building Tesco has a 3 stage bypass interceptor, and as part of a national contract is annually maintained and inspected every five years. They also told us that they have pollution prevention systems in place for all of their stores across London.
We have asked Tesco to put more information on its website that demonstrates how it is protecting the rivers that flow close to its stores and we will be meeting with them again, hopefully later this autumn.
Tesco makes a series of commitments to minimising its environmental impact. In its sustainability webpages it states: “Freshwater bodies (such as lakes, rivers and aquifers) are also essential for nature, wildlife and human communities.” Additionally, they say they are “piloting measures to reduce water use and local environmental impact”.
Currently, because the Environment Agency doesn’t use the law, stormwater pollution is damaging London’s rivers. This also means the compliance of companies isn’t verified. We are working to end this lack of regulation and see much greater scrutiny.
Below we have ranked three Tesco stores.
